Name: Caribou Rainforest: From Heartbreak to Hope
Date: January 15, 2019
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM PST
Event Description:
Sandpoint, ID — The Idaho Conservation League and Braided River are hosting a unique multimedia event, Tuesday, Jan. 15, illuminating the critically threatened world of the mountain caribou. David Moskowitz is an expert wildlife tracker, photographer, and author of the new book Caribou Rainforest: From Heartbreak to Hope (November 2018, Braided River). Join him for this extraordinary opportunity to journey into this tragically threatened world of endangered mountain caribou, their home in the world’s largest last remaining inland temperate rainforest, and the critical human choices that will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem. Also joining him will be ICL’s North Idaho Director, Brad Smith. David and a small team of adventurers have been tracking down these rare creatures and documenting the stunning world they call home. However, the story of this emblematic animal and incredible landscape encompasses shifting conservation challenges and tactics in the twenty-first century. Join him and ICL in a discussion on the failure of agencies in the U.S. and Canada to regulate industrial resource extraction effectively, honor the treaty rights of indigenous peoples, and protect the integrity of the natural systems of this region—and what we can do now to help support this critically endangered habitat. Moskowitz makes a strong case to not give up, and to protect what remains of this rare rainforest ecosystem. In Caribou Rainforest, Moskowitz searches for lessons that can transform despair into hope—and become catalysts for charting a new way forward as we strive to balance human needs with preserving the diversity of the natural world. The event will begin at 7:00pm at the (small) Panida Theater and will include a multimedia presentation, a panel featuring David Moskowitz and Brad Smith, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
